Biking in the Burg

Biking in the Burg Bike Rally
Sunday, April 17 1 pm – 4 pm
James Monroe High School Parking Lot

Mountain Bike Skills Clinic
1pm, 2 pm & 3 pm (After 3 pm class we will ride to the quarry trails)
We’ll lead you through the do’s and don’ts of tackling tough trail obstacles and teach you what you need to know in order to turn frustration into fun. Hands on practice with log crossings, tight turns and hill climbing will have you springing through the woods and cruising down the trail. We will start with a brief lecture and skills demonstration each hour on the hour from 10 am through 1pm. The lecture will cover core skills such as proper braking, hill climbing, shifting and crossing technical trail features such as logs. Advice on environmentally responsible and courteous riding habits will be interlaced into the lecture. Following the lectures at 10am, 11am, and noon students will be allowed to ride through a loop course and volunteer instructors will observe and coach as you navigate the trail features. After the 1pm lecture session we will ride from the JM parking lot down the canal path to the quarry trails. The route and duration will be chosen based on participants’ skill levels but will be intended for beginners. Participants for the clinic and the group ride must be at least 10 years of age.

Bike Safety Rodeo for ages 4 – 10
(Continuous All Day)
A day for children ages 4-10 to learn some bike and safety skills while having fun too! The course will be designed to make children aware of their surroundings while riding their bikes and put to use skills for safe cycling. Participants must have their own bike, which will go through a safety check before riding the course. Helmets are required and provided for those who do not have one. Helmets will be checked for proper fit. There will be prizes and games, something for everyone! Urban Street Skills Workshop Ages 10 and up 1pm, 2 pm & 3 pm There will be an overview of Effective Cycling with a Certified Instructor followed by a ride through downtown Fredericksburg to practice new skills.


Bike and Helmet Safety Check
Continuous All Day
Helmets will be checked for proper fit. Representatives of the Fredericksburg Police will be in attendance to discuss how to safely operate a bicycle on the streets and to provide information on what can be done to protect you bicycle from theft.

Bike Maintenance & Repair Clinic
Continuous All Day
Professional bicycle mechanics will be available to discuss proper maintenance of your bicycle and t inspect anyone’s bicycle to insure it is operating properly, and that all safety devices are in good working order.

Antique Bike Demonstration
Come and see the demonstrations of riding the "Ordinary" and other bikes from the past. World Champion "Ordinary" rider Tim Eggers will show you how it is done!

Bike Decorating
All Ages – All Day Come and decorate your bikes with crepe paper, streamers and other fun stuff.
